Councillor Mark Wheeler

Liberal Democrat Councillor for Airedale Division

East and West Marton

public meeting to consider potential wind farm planning application - 14/5/08

I attended in capacity of County Councillor (although I am on planning at District Council). Issues that were raised =

impact on unique landscape, cost of supplying renewable energy, financial impact on tourism, alternative sources of renewable energy, range of consultation, T.P.O’s, aspects of PPS22 government planning guidance.

General mood of meeting was against application. Advice given -

Need for sound material planning considerations to be given as reasons for refusal.

Do not assume that decision is “a done deal”

put pressure on members of planning committee(the power of the democratic process).

Provide alternatives - avoid accusations of NIMBYism

Get policy advice from planning dept policy officer.

Take advice from other campaigners - trawl web for others that may have had successful campaigns.

Use of NYCC archealogical dept to establish if site has any importance.

Do not send petition or copy of one letter - this will be viewed as only one objection. Individual letters are more effective and are reflected in officers report.

If in doubt  - use your local councillor they will know policy details who to contact, and can offer advice on what to write if objecting.
